Natural sleep aids: what actually helps, and what to skip

4 September 2026 · 6 min read

Almost every week someone stands at our counter in Gezina and says the same thing: I fall asleep fine, but I wake at two and my mind starts working. Sleep is the most common reason people come to herbal wellness, and it is also where the most money gets wasted on the wrong thing.

Here is how we actually approach it.

Start with the evening, not the bottle

A remedy taken at 23:00 after a night of screens and strong coffee is being asked to undo the whole day. Give the body cues instead: a caffeine-free cup from seven, a warm bath, dimmer light, and a consistent bedtime. Every herb below works better on top of that, and some of them will not work at all without it.

Valerian root — for a mind that will not switch off

Valerian is the closest thing herbal wellness has to a direct sleep remedy. It has been used for centuries for restlessness and difficulty falling asleep. Take one to two capsules 30 to 60 minutes before bed with water. It has a strong smell, which is normal. Some people feel it the first night; for others it takes a week.

Ours is pure dried valerian root, 120 capsules, R220.

Ashwagandha — when stress is the real cause

If your sleep broke when your work or your life got heavy, the problem is the stress response rather than sleep itself. Ashwagandha is an adaptogen: it supports how the body carries load, so the change is gradual rather than sedating. Take it in the evening and judge it after a full month, not three nights. R230.

Calming teas — the cue that costs the least

Soursop leaf tea is mild and traditionally taken after supper. Neem and lemongrass is more cleansing, with the lemongrass softening the bitterness. Hibiscus is bright and best earlier in the evening. All are caffeine-free, from R130. The cup itself is doing work: it marks the end of the day.

A bath is not a luxury

Ten minutes in warm water with aura salts, then cooling skin as you get out, is one of the strongest natural sleep signals there is. R170 a jar, and it lasts weeks.

What to skip

Anything promising instant knockout sleep, anything that will not tell you the dose, and stacking four sleep products at once — if it works you will not know which one did it. Start with one remedy and one ritual.

Safety, plainly

Valerian and ashwagandha should not be combined with sedatives or alcohol. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on chronic medication or preparing for surgery, speak to your doctor first. Ongoing insomnia deserves a proper medical look — herbal wellness supports the body, it does not replace care.
